I am truly honored to continue my public service by being appointed by Gov. Sandoval to the Board of Education for Northern Nevada. While I will no longer be an assemblyman, I plan to continue my efforts to champion innovative reforms that will help Nevada students be prepared for workforce and career opportunities in the “New Nevada.”
I will also continue sending you regular “newsletters,” whenever I feel there is an important issue to address.
Thanks again. And as always, best…Pat Hickey
Carson City, NV – Governor Brian Sandoval today announced the appointment of former-Assemblyman Pat Hickey to the District Two seat on the Nevada State Board of Education for a term ending January 1, 2017, effective immediately. Hickey resigned his seat in the Assembly earlier today and will fill the seat vacated by the unfortunate passing of Board Member Dave Cook. Governor Sandoval also announced the appointment of Allison Stephens and Teri Jamin as non-voting members of the Board as the Board of Regents representative and Nevada Associated School Boards representative, respectively, for terms ending January 1, 2018. Stephens will replace Regent Kevin Melcher.
“Pat Hickey has served as a dedicated public official who has always strived to improve Nevada’s education system. He was one of the earliest champions of charter schools and academic standards, and has always sought a meaningful balance between investing in and reforming our education system,” said Governor Brian Sandoval. “It has been an honor to work alongside Pat during his time in the legislature and I believe he will serve as an advocate for Nevada’s students and educators on the State Board of Education.”
Pat Hickey is a native Nevadan who grew up at Lake Tahoe and served in the Nevada Legislature for four terms, which included time as the Assembly Minority Leader. He has been a consistent voice for the expansion for public school reforms like charter and magnet schools, and greater choice for Nevada families, including homeschooling. In 2013, then-Assembly Minority Leader Hickey was appointed to the 2013-2014 Interim Task Force on K-12 Public Education Funding that helped make recommendations to improve the “Nevada Plan” funding formula that had not been revised in 47 years. During the 2015 Legislative Session, Hickey served as Chairman of the Ways and Means Subcommittee on K-12/Higher Ed Funding–which approved unprecedented changes to categorical and targeted spending in Nevada’s schools where it was most needed. Hickey has a master’s degree in Journalism from the University of Nevada, Reno and is active member of the Northern Nevada community.
“I am honored to have been selected by Governor Sandoval to serve out the term of State Board member Dave Cook. Dave was a college instructor of my wife’s, and I look forward to carrying on his devotion to education as the Northern Nevada representative on the State Board of Education,” said Pat Hickey.
